It's rare that I'll do an editorial, and even more rare to find boxing news on this website, but this was worth commenting on.
For any of us who bothered watching Danny Green "fight" Paul Briggs, I'm pretty sure we've all come to the same conclusion. The fight was a farce, and it only further taints what was once a great sport.
To me Green vs Briggs was reminiscent of Tyson vs McNeely back in 1995 (but at least that fight went longer). It was however another example of a qualified fighter vs an out of shape tomato can who clearly had no place in the ring.
Briggs' conduct will remain questionable as to whether he threw the fight to collect an easy pay check, or whether he really got KO'd. Danny Green however should accept partial responsibility for this outcome. He pursued a fight against a soft opponent who was clearly in no shape, and nothing more but an easy paycheck knockout for a higher caliber fighter. Lets not forget that Briggs was deemed not fit to fight in NSW. There was a reason for that, and Green should have been sensible enough to select a worthy opponent that had something to lose.
For me the sweet science is a fond yet distant memory, and the Green vs Briggs fight reminds me of why I stopped caring for the sport, and why I love MMA so much. No sport is free of controversy, but when I watch MMA, apart from the excitement of watching highly trained and multi-disciplined fighters, I'm glad to be free of the world of Don King's, ear biting and fight fixing.
It's a wonder in this world that Boxing even holds an audience given the over-hyping, over-paid, and under-performing fighters compared to Mixed Martial Arts. Lets hope MMA doesn't ever turn into the circus that boxing has become.
