Liddell may still return

August 31, 2010 18:01 by MMA Admin

In a recent Q & A session at the UFC Fan expo Chuck Liddel said he hopes to make a decision in the next couple of months about his MMA future.

After his recent loss at the hands of Rich Franklin, Liddel hasn't fought for two months and says he hasn't been home much as he's been travelling. He said if he does come back it wont be for a one-off, as he only wants to fight the best and would only fight with the aim of winning the belt.

Liddel's recent loss was his third consecutive knockout defeat which took him to 1 win out of his last 5 fights. Dana White was clear that he feels Liddel should retire, but when asked what he would do if Liddel insisted on continuing fighting White said he may consider releasing the Iceman. This has fueled speculation that Liddel may fight in another organization, although Liddel has pointed out that if he decides to fight he'd prefer to stay in the UFC as he believes this is where the best competition is.

Cro Cop to face Frank Mir at UFC 119

August 18, 2010 14:44 by MMA Admin

Cro Cop is set to replace the injured Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera in the main event of UFC 119 at Indiana's Conseco Fieldhouse on September 25.

Big Nog was forced to withdraw from the event due to a hip injury that will require surgery. Cro Cop's opponent will be the former UFC heavyweight Champion Frank Mir who is coming off a loss to Shane Carwin while Cro Cop is coming off a win over fellow Kickboxer Pat Barry.

This should be an interesting fight for Cro Cop who's known as one of the best strikers and has excellent takedown defence. Mir however has a size and reach advantage and is also known for studying his opponents and bringing a strategic fight plan.

Roger Huerta Involved in Street Fight

August 6, 2010 18:04 by MMA Admin

TMZ recently interviewed former UFC fighter Roger Huerta, who was involved in a street fight incident in Austin Texas.

Huerta said that after seeing a man king hit a woman he calmy approached the guy and asked "Do you know what you just did? You just knocked out this girl." Huerta said the man responded by saying "F*ck you, f*ck these bitches, I'll knock out any f*ckin' bitch that I wanna f*ckin' knock out, I’ll knock your f*cking bitch ass out."

Following these comments the man allegedly tried to punch Roger, who in turn counter-attacked the man. The footage doesn't reveal much of the action, but it's clear that the more skilled Huerta out-classed the woman-basher.

Anderson Silva plans to retire at middleweight

July 29, 2010 13:41 by MMA Admin

Although Anderson Silva is not looking past his next fight against Chael Sonnen, he has been asked about fighting in other weight classes, even at Heavyweight.

Silva has encountered success at the light heavyweight division, with a victory over James Irvin and Forrest Griffin, but he ultimately says he is happy at middleweight and he intends to retire there. It doesn't mean that he will never consider other weight classes, just that he wants to finish his career at middleweight.

A potential fight with GSP has been rumoured, but Silva doesn't want to talk about that fight as he is focused on Sonnen right now.

Given Silva's lack lustre performance against Demian Maia, and Sonnen's firey words leading into this bout, we expect a good show between the two.

Green vs Briggs, and people ask why boxing is dying?

July 22, 2010 16:32 by MMA Admin

It's rare that I'll do an editorial, and even more rare to find boxing news on this website, but this was worth commenting on.

For any of us who bothered watching Danny Green "fight" Paul Briggs, I'm pretty sure we've all come to the same conclusion. The fight was a farce, and it only further taints what was once a great sport.

To me Green vs Briggs was reminiscent of Tyson vs McNeely back in 1995 (but at least that fight went longer). It was however another example of a qualified fighter vs an out of shape tomato can who clearly had no place in the ring.

Briggs' conduct will remain questionable as to whether he threw the fight to collect an easy pay check, or whether he really got KO'd. Danny Green however should accept partial responsibility for this outcome. He pursued a fight against a soft opponent who was clearly in no shape, and nothing more but an easy paycheck knockout for a higher caliber fighter. Lets not forget that Briggs was deemed not fit to fight in NSW. There was a reason for that, and Green should have been sensible enough to select a worthy opponent that had something to lose.

For me the sweet science is a fond yet distant memory, and the Green vs Briggs fight reminds me of why I stopped caring for the sport, and why I love MMA so much. No sport is free of controversy, but when I watch MMA, apart from the excitement of watching highly trained and multi-disciplined fighters, I'm glad to be free of the world of Don King's, ear biting and fight fixing.

It's a wonder in this world that Boxing even holds an audience given the over-hyping, over-paid, and under-performing fighters compared to Mixed Martial Arts. Lets hope MMA doesn't ever turn into the circus that boxing has become.

Mark Hunt Joins UFC

July 15, 2010 14:57 by MMA Admin

Mark "The Samoan Monster" Hunt looks to be joining the ranks of the UFC.

In a recent interview with Jordan Breen from Sherdog Hunt revealled that he will most likely be fighting on the UFC 119 card. Hunt recognizes that this could be his last opportunity and has conceded that things could have been different if he'd taken his training more seriously.

"If I'd trained as hard as some of the guys out here, I probably wouldn't be sitting here right now," Hunt said. "I'd be at a different level of fighting. "I just used up my time," he said with a shrug. "I squandered it."

At the pinnacle of his career Hunt wont the K-1 World Grand Prix final and secured wins over notable fighters Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic and Wanderlei Silva. Since then however his transition into Mixed Martial Arts has been less than stellar, but Hunt will get one last chance at redemption.

Hunt will make his debut against Sean McCorkle (9-0-0) on September 25th. He is currently considering his training options including hooking up with Josh Barnett and Erik Paulson in the US.
